Intuition (from the Latin. “TShSho” – I look closely) – comprehension of the truth by its direct discretion without justification with the help of evidence; the subjective ability, formed on the basis of previous experience, to go beyond its limits by mental grasping (“insight”) or generalization in an imaginative form of unknown connections, patterns.

A strategic choice – when it comes to vital goals that encompass the whole person and are designed for many years of hard work, which necessarily includes conscious self-creation and self-realization within the social culture of the country where this person lives.

Tactical choice is an integral part of strategic choice, limited in time to a greater extent than strategic choice, can be changed when choosing means and methods of achievement.

Situational choice – submits to a specific motive, momentary need, does not follow from the tactical and strategic goals of career development.

No matter how the choice is made, it expands the system of social ties or, conversely, narrows them down, providing a turn in the life path of a person. A positive choice broadens and deepens social ties, while a negative one qualitatively reduces it. A positive choice is the starting point of the further development of the personality and an important stage of self-determination.

Using employment techniques is not only an opportunity to arrange your life, but also an effective technology for career growth. If you want to make a career, the choice is small: either grow like a tree up in one place, or rush to the top, jumping from step to step, risking slipping and falling. These are the two main career growth strategies – moving vertically or diagonally.

There is a third strategy, which, following the same analogy, can be called “horizontal growth” – an increase in income without growth in the position. One wise carpenter once said that one and the same nail can be hammered in one place for a ruble, and in another – for 10! And this is not a metaphor, but a harsh reality. For example, if you are a professional in your field, an excellent worker, you are quite happy with the job, you don’t want to become a boss – it’s troublesome, but do not mind earning more, find an employer who is willing to pay more for the same job. Or, tired of intensive career growth, you need a quiet and reliable harbor to gain strength, engage in professional growth and prepare a springboard for the next throw – this is also an occasion to use a horizontal model.

Career development “vertically” means growth in one company. Previously, newspapers often wrote about plant directors who started as apprentices of a locksmith in the same enterprise. The vertical career growth scheme has its advantages: you gain experience in one place, credibility among employees, you can rely on the trust of superiors, etc. Recently, more and more serious companies are beginning to understand that you can create a loyal and effective employee, satisfying his ambitions, giving the opportunity to grow in one company. Unfortunately, the vertical model of career growth has its drawbacks. First, you will grow slowly. If you are doing a good job, bosses are simply not interested in your career: why “give up” a valuable employee? Everyone knows you well, your advantages and disadvantages in plain sight. If the latter are remembered more, they will restrain your career growth. In addition, such a scheme does not work in companies with a “flat” management structure. Well, and perhaps the main thing: in one company it is almost impossible to overcome the barrier of top management. That is, you will grow until you hit your forehead against an invisible barrier: top management will not want to take you into their circle. And here you will realize that it’s time to move to the side …

A much more dynamic scheme is diagonal career growth. You can quickly climb up, jumping from one company to another, with each jump appearing in a higher position. The main thing here is not to stop, constantly monitor new opportunities, choosing the most promising in terms of career growth. You need to have a flair for a strategist to guess where you can get the best skills, knowledge, experience, recommendations that will quickly jump to a new step. A convincing example of an ideally growing careerist can be easily found in the administration of one of the large factories. This person, holding, for example, a marketing director (a high position and a very high salary) for only 2 weeks, already held in his hands a ready resume for a higher position. This summary was of considerable interest, since it reflects a short, but very impressive career path. So, from a simple sales manager (3 years), he moved to another company as a regional representative (2 years), then became a product group manager in the next company (six months) and, finally, marketing director (2 weeks at the time of meeting ) I hope you noticed the impressive dynamics – a sign of experience.

The strategy of diagonal growth in career development is certainly effective, but not without flaws. Firstly, if you move too dynamically, you run the risk of earning a reputation as a “flyer”. Secondly, too dynamic movement can play a bad joke with you if your career growth is ahead of professional. At one point, it may turn out that you are in a place that requires much more than you can give. The worse it gets, the higher you climb. Therefore, take your time, collect information qualitatively and analyze the situation. And thirdly, it must be borne in mind that each company has its own position in the market. You have a very real chance in a short period of time to move to a higher position from the company of the first division to the company of the second. You will lose a little in income, but you will rise to a new step in the career ladder. Then you can also go to the company of the third division, and then where? There is nowhere to retreat … It is possible that after working for a year or two in the harsh conditions of a real business, you will gain invaluable experience and want to return to the company of the first division. But will they be able to evaluate your experience there? I think it will depend only on you, or rather, on how convincingly you describe your advantages to a new employer. Be prepared for the fact that the transition to a lower division company is tantamount to a loss of business reputation and in the end it will be difficult to return to the “white” market. In this situation, you can give preference to a strategy of horizontal career growth for some time.

Another intermediate career development option: horizontal growth. As a rule, it is expressed in salary growth without promotion. Having worked in the company of the 2nd division and gaining practical experience, you transfer to the same position in the firm of the 1st division, while the salary can increase by 2-3 times. If you close your eyes to your ambitions for a moment and imagine that we really work only for money, you will realize that this may be the best choice.
